What Do You Need to Make Your Own Cannabis Gummies?

If you want to make your own cannabis gummies for Halloween, you’ll need Jello, gelatin, corn syrup, and cannabis oil or tincture.  Making cannabis gummies at home is part science, part art, with every ingredient having a purpose. As these are Halloweed gummies, they have a blood-red center.

Here's a breakdown of the essential components and their significance in the gummy-making process. Cannabis infused MCT oil or cannabis tincture.

  1. Gelatin. Unflavored gelatin for structure. Vegans can swap unflavored gelatin for agar.

  2. Jello, for taste and color

  3. Juice or coconut water

  4. Corn syrup. Helps prevent crystallization, adds chew, keeps the surface shiny and makes the gummies look more Haribo-like.

  5. Sunflower lecithin. An emulsifier that helps oil and water mix and helps THC and other cannabinoids bind more efficiently to fat, improving how your body absorbs them

  6. Citric acid. Acts as a natural preservative, imparting a tart, sour flavor to gummies.

  7. Cannabis infused MCT oil or tincture.

  8. Food coloring, I used green and red.

  9. Oil spray, so gummies do  ot stick to the molds

  10. Silicone molds, plastic pipette, small saucepan, heatproof glass bowl, silicon spatula, digital scale, and a blender.

It assumes you are using cannabis infused MCT oil, but notes for tincture appear where needed

This recipe is for around 50 small gummies at 5mg THC each gummy. If you want stronger gummies, I recommend using larger gummy molds and using more cannabis oil. For this recipe, you need:

• Orange juice or water: 3/4 cup

• Corn syrup: 2 to 4 tablespoons

• Unflavored gelatin: 7 sheets of gelatin leaf (around 6.5 grams)

• Flavored gelatin: 1 pack of Jello

• Sunflower lecithin: 2 to 3 grams = 3/4 to 1 teaspoon powder, or 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons liquid

• Cannabis MCT oil: 2 to 3 teaspoons, based on your potency math

• Citric acid (optional): 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon

• Neutral oil spray for molds: optional

Step 1

Prep your workspace. Lightly spray the molds with neutral oil to prevent the gummies from sticking, and place them on a tray or cutting board so they can be easily moved without spilling.

Step 2

Calculate the dose. Write down the potency of your cannabis oil or tincture, your target number of gummies, and the dose per weed gummy.

Step 3

Bloom the gelatin sheets. Add the water or juice and gelatin sheets or powder to a small bowl at room temperature and let it bloom for a few minutes. Add the Jello.

Step 4

While the gelatin is blooming, add the cannabis oil or tincture and the sunflower lecithin to a heat-proof glass bowl and put it in a saucepan of water.  Set the saucepan over low heat (keep the mix between 160 and 175°F). Stir gently with a silicone spatula.

Step 5

Add the juice to the bowl with the Jell-O and gelatin and stir. Once melted, add the citric acid and corn syrup. Heat gently for around 10 minutes.

Step 6

Remove the gummy mix once it is melted and mix it with a spatula or blend it for 5-10 minutes. If the mixture solidifies, you can re-melt it in the saucepan or heat-resistant bowl.

Note for those who use tincture: If you are using an alcohol-based tincture, add it once the mixture has cooled below 65 °C to minimize alcohol loss.

Step 7

Put ⅓ of the mix in a separate bowl and add red food coloring. Add green coloring to the remaining gummy mixture.

Step 8

Use a plastic pipette to fill the bottom of the molds with the green gummy mix, and cool in the fridge until set. Once set, usually within 30 minutes, add a small amount of the red gummy mix to the center of the gummies and refrigerate. Once cooled, pour the remaining green gummy mix into the molds and chill. Move trays to the refrigerator. Chill for 45 to 60 minutes, until firm to the touch and the edges pull cleanly from the mold.

Step 9

Pop the Halloween weed gummies out and place them on a parchment-lined rack. Air dry for a couple of days until the surface is dry and bouncy. This step concentrates flavor, improves the chew consistency, and reduces stickiness. Put the gummies in bags and label them with the date and the strength per gummy.

Troubleshooting Making Halloween Weed Gummies

  • If the gummies are too soft, add more gelatin to the mix, and melt.

  • If the gummies are too hard, add a little more juice or corn syrup.

  • To make extra sour gummies, roll them in a mix of sugar and citric acid.

Storing Halloweed Gummies

Storing homemade cannabis gummies properly helps preserve their potency and flavor. I recommend storing them inside a container in the fridge for up to 2-3 weeks. If you want to store the weed gummies long-term, you can freeze the gummies for up to 6 months.

A Note on Cannabis Edibles

Edibles take longer to act and last longer than inhaled cannabis. Start with a low dose, wait at least two hours, and avoid stacking servings too quickly. Effects vary with metabolism and whether you ate recently. Do not drive or operate machinery after consuming THC gummies.

If this is your first batch, for weed gummy dosage, target 2.5 to 5 milligrams THC per gummy. Eat one and wait for at least one hour before taking more weed gummies. If you are a regular edible consumer, you can up the dose.

FAQs for Making Halloween Weed Gummies

How long do the effects from cannabis gummies last?

The effects from eating a pot gummy last for 2-8 hours, depending on the dose, your metabolism, and whether you have eaten before having the gummies.

Can I use agar instead of gelatin

You can use agar instead of Jello and gelatin.

Why use lecithin when making weed gummies?

Lecithin is used in weed gummies to help mix oil and water. It keeps the cannabis oil evenly distributed so each gummy has the same amount of THC. It also helps your body absorb THC better and gives the gummies a smoother texture. Sunflower or soy lecithin both work. Use about 1 teaspoon per cup of liquid. Skipping it can lead to uneven potency and separation.

What dose should I choose?

Beginners should start at 2.5 to 5 milligrams of THC. Regular users may prefer 10 milligrams of THC and upwards.

Can I use tincture to make cannabis gummies?

You can use cannabis tincture to make THC gummies. Add when the Jello mixture is below 149°F to preserve potency.
