Genetics Guru, Terp Preserver, and Legendary Cannabis Breeder: Green Bodhi
John Bayes, also known as Green Bodhi, is a major influence in cannabis culture.
From being a legacy horticulturalist to a medical grower, to helping shape government rules, and now a Buddhist teacher, Green Bodhi is known for his deep connection to cannabis. He carefully chooses and grows his plants organically. John encourages us to rethink cannabis. He says:
“All the breeding that I've done is to basically create something that I'm gonna be satisfied with, and I'm very particular."
A Leader with Intention in Cannabis
Green Bodhi focuses on growing cannabis with a strong purpose:
"Intentional horticulture isn't just about growing the best weed to benefit others. It's about the intention of growing yourself while growing the best weed to benefit others.”
He believes in a close relationship with the plant. His growing style comes from a lifetime of experience. It affects the quality and spirit of the plant: "I've been dealing with this since I was a kid, you know, this plant's been calling me since I was six years old. I saw these plants in the back of someone's backyard just like in the wind, you know, and they're really calling me."
From Eugene, Oregon: A Hub of Cannabis Culture
John is from Eugene, Oregon, a place known for its rich cannabis culture: “I've been in Eugene since the early 90s and growing since, you know, early 97, and you know, there’s no place cannabis culture developed more than in Eugene… with the Oregon Country Fair Grateful Dead family, Kezey family, Mary Pranksters all that's Eugene,”
The area's history and community have shaped John as a grower and breeder. Oregon is a center of cannabis culture, where it's been celebrated and studied deeply: “…when the compost tea thing hit, it comes through us because of her (Dr.Ingram) work at the University of Oregon. They discovered this kind of compost tea method …”
Decades of Preserving Great Genetics and Knowledge
John says it's not just about genetics:
"For me, it’s not just about the genetics. Don’t get me wrong, they are a huge clutch aspect, but how you select is really what's most important in my opinion."
He has spent decades preserving and improving cannabis strains. He selects strains that are rich in terpenes and powerful: "The selection process for myself is; it had to hit me. As I’m taking the toke and it’s going in, it had to do what I like; it had to register right as I’m starting to bring it in."
Creating a Compassionate Cannabis Community
Green Bodhi combines growing plants with growing spiritually. His name, “Green Bodhi,” shows this blend, with "Green" for the plants and "Bodhi" for the teachings. He's been key in changing laws and supporting patient rights. He believes in growing, consuming, and understanding cannabis mindfully. He views himself as a teacher through cannabis, linking people and plants with intention:
“… they're putting something that I created into their body, and so I created this medicinal conduit that actually is a framework for all of my intentions, my intention for them to be happy.”
John stresses the need for high intention and clear focus in his work. He aims for his products to not just offer physical help but also bring happiness.

"What I need in my gut that makes me most healthy is similar things to what I need in my container."
He shares his deep cultivation knowledge and his strains, helping us understand ourselves and the plant better: “...you know, one day the plant told me like hey, if you know, take care of me, I'll take care of you, but you have to be a steward in this way… that’s why I chose organic, living soil… now I eat organic, live organic.”
