The Most Beautiful Weed Strains You Can Grow Right Now

Contrary to how movies depict cannabis buds, they come in various colors outside their typical green, dried-tea leaf look. We have colorful buds in the first place because of beautiful weed strains like Purple Haze and Granddaddy Purple, which produce uniquely colored flowers.

How does weed get its color?

Plenty of factors affect the color of your cannabis plants. A couple of examples are genetics, light, temperature, and pH level. Ultimately, genetics determine whether your plants will produce colorful cannabis buds.

Only some strains can create more of a certain chemical compound that’s necessary for producing colorful buds. The chemical compound is called anthocyanins, a flavonoid and plant pigment that gives some weed plants red, blue, or purple colors

You need to lower the temperature around your plants to truly bring out these colors in the most beautiful weed strains. Typically this is done during cannabis’ flowering stage.

ph levels
PH Levels

Anthocyanin and pH

In the right conditions, your weed plants will begin to change color. As the temperature around your cannabis drops, the plant’s chlorophyll breaks down, leaving the anthocyanins as the dominant plant pigment.

Light also affects anthocyanin accumulation in your cannabis plants. Depending on what type of grow light you use and what color of light it shines–typically, anthocyanin prefers blue, blue-green, and green light–it may encourage anthocyanin accumulation.

While light and temperature help draw more of the anthocyanins out of your plants, the soil’s pH level (where your plants get their nutrients) determines what color your weed will take. It’s not the only factor since genetics often comes first when determining the color of cannabis. However, adjusting the pH level to encourage a specific type of color to pop can help make your buds more vibrant.

With all that said, the takeaway for you as a grower is that despite factors that encourage the dominance of anthocyanin in your plants, it may not yield any notable results if you’re growing a strain with no history of producing colorful buds. If you want to grow some beautiful weed, you need beautiful weed strains like Gelato and Northern Lights that are guaranteed to produce colorful buds. Keep in mind, the color of buds doesn’t necessarily mean that the strain is potent. Color can only tell you the type of experience to expect. Typically warmer-colored buds are known for an uplifting and energizing buzz, while darker-colored ones relax.

Common colors in Weed

Violet: Violet is one of the more well-known colors that weed produces. You can see it in strains like Purple Haze and any cannabis strains included in our purple mix pack.

Indigo: Indigo-colored strains are also a type of purple weed strain. For instance, Agent Orange produces deep purple plants despite its name. Another example is Super Silver Haze, whose plants have purple patches.

Blue: Blue cannabis strains are another common color for weed. If you want to grow some for yourself, we recommend our blue mix pack, which includes Blue Cheese and Blue Haze.

Green: The predominant color for cannabis is green. Most strains don’t have anthocyanins as their dominant pigment; instead, their chlorophyll gives buds their standard green color.

Yellow: Sativa strains mostly produce warm-colored buds, and there’s no better example of it than Green Crack. Aside from its name, this strain has buds with a greenish-yellow color.

Orange: Orange-colored buds can either mean the strain has orange flowers or orange pistils. It’s more common for the latter rather than the former. An example of this would be Tangie, a strain that produces vibrant orange pistils.

Red: Red cannabis is considered extremely rare, like in the case of Pink Flower Shaman, a red strain that’s difficult to come by.

Northern Lights

This strain deserves its place here as one of the most beautiful weed strains because of its shimmering, crystal-like coating, enhancing the purple streaks on its leaves and buds. Brassy orange pistils add a touch of warm colors. The combination of its purple leaves, dark-olive buds, and orange pistils make Northern Lights one of the prettiest weed strains you can grow at home.

Northern Lights feminized seeds

This strain is what we call 'word of mouth' famous. If you've heard of any one strain, it's usually Northern Lights - and for good reason. Northern Lights seeds grow buds that drip with resin, it has a short flowering phase, and growers at every level love it!

Despite its colorful appearance, Northern Lights provide a relaxing experience. When toked, you’ll feel a sense of relief wash over your body while your mind fills with euphoria. It’s not too potent that you’ll find yourself couchlocked, but it’s not too light that you won’t feel anything. For easy growing, try our Northern Lights autoflower.

When it comes to experiencing Gelato, you’ll find that it has the same flavorful tokes and potent effects that Girl Scout Cookies is known for; this means sweet flavors that are tied to a heavy-handed high. In fact, Gelato is known for its potency and is not recommended for the inexperienced. Like the high it gives, Gelato isn’t easy for new growers, so Gelato autoflower exists. It’s a more accessible alternative to growing this potent strain.

GG4 (also known as Gorilla Glue)

Gorilla Glue (GG4) is more known for its pungent smell and strong effects than the appearance of its buds, yet those with keen eyes will be able to see the beauty in them. This high-resin strain produces dense trichomes that will cover the buds of your cannabis, giving them a frosty appearance – and it’s that white layer of frost that gives Gorilla Glue its beauty and why it’s one of the most beautiful weed strains on this list.

ILGM's GG4 strain is a great grow for everyone, beginner and expert alike. They provide a great and easy grow that produces bud you love without a ton of extra effort.

Because it has such dense trichomes, Gorilla Glue packs quite the punch. However, despite having such a strong sedating quality, it does balance it out by providing touches of happiness and euphoria that help ease you into bed. And unlike its effects, Gorilla Glue is an easy strain to cultivate, but it can be easier if you choose to grow Gorilla Glue autoflower.

Bubblegum

Bubblegum is one of the other pretty weed strains on this list that produces buds with a layer of frost. Like Gorilla Glue, this strain has dense trichomes that coat the surface of its buds and even its leaves. On the note of its leaves, once you flush this particular strain, you’ll see its leaves turn either red, purple, or blue.

Unfortunately, Growing Blue Haze is anything but relaxing. While it is fairly easy to cultivate, it’s known for being unable to handle sudden shifts in temperature and humidity levels.
